For many of us, going camping means getting dirty and going without a shower for several days. Which is unpleasant and makes a camping trip not as enjoyable as it could be. I say "could be" because in fact there is a way to camp outdoors and stay clean: it's called a camping shower.
Portable camping showers come in different styles and range in price from 20 to over a 100 dollars. The most basic models are solar shower bags, which are heavy-duty bags that you fill with water and set out in the sun to heat up. Solar shower bags are made in sizes ranging from 3 to 5-gallons, which provide a (approximately) 5 and 8 minute shower respectively. Most solar shower bags need to be placed under direct sunlight in an open area, where it will take around 2 to 3 hours for the water to get warm.
The more advanced models are usually equipped with a pump providing high water pressure and a propane canister that supplies hot water instantaneously. They are significantly more expensive that solar shower bags but unlike the solar models, there's no waiting time for hot water and no depedence on sunny weather. They have their drawbacks however, and the biggest of them is their weight. Meaning you won't be taking one on a hiking trip, unless you've got a donkey that can carry that heavy propane cannister. As a side note, and speaking of animals, many people use their portable showers to wash their pets so you can definitely think up new ways to utilize them. Another convenient use for portable camping showers is for washing the dishes after meals. Basically, anytime you're living outdoors for days at a time, having hot water available at your fingertips is an indispensable luxury.
You may be thinking that adding yet another gadget to your long list of camping gear is not something you're interested in. But believe me: having a warm, private shower after a sweaty day of playing in the outdoors is something that, once you've tried it, you will never again want to be without.
